My name is Pastor Yared Eshetu. I serve as a pastor and Bible teacher in Faith Bible International Church. I have had the opportunity to read the first draft of the commentary Brother Adi wrote on the Epistle to the Ephesians. I would like to say that it is a good beginning and a good book. There are not many theological books written in our language. Although there are some beginnings, there is still a yawning gap. Therefore, our brother’s commentary, which follows the verse by verse expository style, is a good beginning. This is very important for the church in our country. The western world has produced a great variety of books including theological books. The abundance of such books in a country in part reflects on the growth of the church the wealth of knowledge of God’s word in that country. The gospel is spreading far and wide in our country and a great number of people are coming to the Lord. At the same time, a great number of people are joining theological schools. However, there are not enough books to teach the great number of people that are in need of them. Most of the theological schools are using western commentaries written in English. I also used English books when I was learning. Those books are written in the context of the western world which poses two problems: the first one is the language. Since the books are not in our language, we study both language as well as the theology. There may be some things we miss along the way. The second problem is that the books are written with the western context in mind. It is high time we started developing theological commentaries that take our country’s context and our needs into consideration. We need commentaries written by our own people in our language. Books in our own language can help ministers understand what exactly the word means while they are preparing teachings. Moreover, there are various views on which we may not agree. Nonetheless, we need to know what other people think and believe, especially those of us who are involved in the teaching ministry because we may come across people in the congregation who have been exposed to various views. Some of the ministers may not have the opportunity or the exposure to various views. Therefore, if they get hold of books in their own language, they can learn by reading. They will also be able to understand the word deeply and present it to people as deeply as they have understood it. I would like to point out that the book of Ephesians is a very essential book. The first part of Ephesians, chapters one, two and three, present Christian doctrines while the second part deals with how to apply the doctrines and live the life in Christ. Our brother Adi has done a tough work presenting a detailed commentary on Ephesians. So, if it is published and gets into the hands of believers, it will be beneficial. We ought to encourage our brother as he is very important for the church in Ethiopia. The western world has a lot of books and we need to encourage our brother to keep on writing. God bless you abundantly.
